Artistic Encounters between tradition and modernity

The Art Nova gallery in Berlin-Charlottenburg celebrates the vibrant artistic traditions of different continents and cultures. Alongside a curated selection of contemporary artworks by emerging artists from around the world, the gallery displays Asian design objects.

Lu Lu (Xi'an, China) combines traditional ink and mineral pigment techniques with contemporary artistic expression. His tranquil, timeless landscapes invite contemplation of nature and humanity. Lu Lu's art focuses on themes of self-reflection and calm emotions, opening up a space for inner silence and thoughtfulness.

Martina Schumacher (Berlin, Germany), on the other hand, creates light-reflecting spatial mirror images in which real and imaginary spaces blend together harmoniously. She uses coloured gels, ink, steel forms and transparent plastic strips to extend painting into space. Through her work, she explores the interplay of colour, light and architecture, creating precise, atmospheric forms.

Contemporary painter Yu Chuan Chang (Taipei Taiwan), combines Eastern and Western aesthetics in his work. Although trained in the Western oil-painting tradition, he is deeply influenced by Chinese ink philosophy, evident in his use of the interplay of fluid ink and dense oil. Using burnt textures, natural mineral pigments and free-flowing surfaces, he creates a unique style that encapsulates Eastern spiritual contemplation in a modern form.

This exhibition facilitates a fascinating dialogue between artists who engage with the themes of space, light and emotion in different ways.

Revealing and reflecting on transformations

For René Mayer (born 1947), represented by Sculpictor Diffusion in Basel, painting and sculpture are two equally valid forms of expression driven by the same inner impulse. Having started out with representational art in the 1970s, he quickly developed his own visual language. Today, his body of work comprises around 600 paintings and sculptures, demonstrating great thematic depth and formal diversity.

René Mayer explores social, ecological, and cultural issues. He examines the relationships between humans, nature and technology, translating these into works of art that are both subtle and powerful. Colour, form and material act as mediators between the visible and invisible worlds, and between personal reflection and global contexts.
The series 'Imperceptible Shift' (see image, exemplified here by one of 112 artworks) addresses the fact that changes rarely occur abruptly, but usually in an imperceptible manner. It highlights subtle shifts and toxic mutations, as well as the processes of crushing and reshaping that occur in both private and global contexts, revealing the barely perceptible transformations of our civilisation.
Through his multifaceted body of work, René Mayer successfully combines aesthetic rigour and social relevance, providing a precise and poetic commentary on a world in transition.

Weaving emotional narratives

The Boulderton Gallery in Miami promotes innovative art forms and practices. The gallery has built its reputation by showcasing a variety of art movements, including painting, photography and sculpture.

The Belgian-American artist Claude Roegiers began his artistic career, during which he also pursued a career in fashion. This had a strong influence on his work. After creating abstract paintings featuring geometric shapes on painted fabrics, he applied the warp and weft effect to his work for the first time. This technique, which is used in textile manufacturing, refers to the way warp and weft threads are interwoven in the weaving process.
This creates different patterns and textures. Roegiers combines this technique with pictorial painting to emphasise the emotional and narrative elements of his work. This allows exploration of memories and emotions in a fresh way, unveiling a hidden world.

Unveiling perspectives

The programme at Galerie Sechs in Basel explores themes such as humanity, relationships, nature and changing perspectives, offering emotional depth and conceptual clarity.

Marco Benedetti is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates analogue and digital photography, drawing, painting and mixed media into his work. He combines technical precision, honed through his studies in engineering and visual communication, with an intuitive and emotionally charged style of expression.
Drawing inspiration from Japanese martial arts and Satori philosophy, his art reflects clarity and quiet intensity. An internationally acclaimed artist, Benedetti's recent sculptural photographs, which are physically incised and sutured, represent a shift from mere representation to material intervention.

Focus on African women artists

The Brulhart Gallery in Geneva is dedicated to promoting the work of contemporary women artists of African heritage. Rooted in feminist and intercultural principles, the gallery serves as a meeting place between Africa, its diaspora, and the Swiss art scene. Through its exhibitions, the gallery provides a platform for artists to present works exploring themes such as history, family, community, relationships, gender identities, and personal fulfilment.
While women, particularly women of colour, remain underrepresented in private and public collections, the gallery is making a deliberate statement. Its programme consists exclusively of monographic and group exhibitions by African and Afro-descendant female artists. This reaffirms the gallery's commitment to a feminist curatorial approach, creating a space where art, feminism and intercultural dialogue converge. This enables the voices of African female artists to be heard loud and clear.

Olga Yaméogo moved from Burkina Faso to France in the 1980s, and her work explores universal themes. The 2020 pandemic sparked a reflective period during which she explored human relationships, as well as feelings of loss and melancholy. Her art embodies the complexities of her departure from Africa, examining globalisation from an individual perspective and focusing on migration. By blurring the images of her subjects, she challenges negative perceptions of migrants, creating an intimidating, anonymous crowd. In contrast, her portraits isolate individuals, granting them unique identities and highlighting their stories.

Brulhart Gallery will present works by Theresah Ankomah, Amy Celestina, Dr Gindi, Aza Mansongi, Klervie Mouho and Olga Yaméogo.

The choreography of colour and movement

STRAIT is a renowned contemporary French painter who draws inspiration from the energy and musicality of nature. He started out in the 1980s as a graffiti artist and travelled the world as a stage designer. It was during this time that he developed his graphic style and preference for large-format works within the street art scene.
By combining figurative and abstract elements, STRAIT blends classical techniques with urban materials. STRAIT creates ephemeral chalk artworks on various surfaces around the world. His distinctive style incorporates movement, colour and energy, oscillating between abstraction and figuration. He draws inspiration primarily from nature and music, particularly the movement of the sea and the ebb and flow of the tides.

Connecting contrasts

Project 061 is an artists' collective. Although they share a common interest in painterly expressiveness, the two artists take completely different approaches. Project 061 is a dialogue of opposites, combining impulsiveness and conscious multi-layering, as well as abstraction and narrative - always seeking to create a resonance between artwork and viewer.

Elvira Heimann creates large-format abstract works, combining different media and materials to form a semi-figurative visual language in which vital energy and vitality are palpable. Having previously pursued a career as a pastor and clinical psychologist, she now explores how people navigate chaotic realities and develop inner stability through her art. Her works reflect processes of structuring. read more

Wolfgang Schaper presents the Venus Project. This ongoing series of figurative paintings combines classical techniques with modern references. They symbolise change, lightness, and inner freedom. The paintings are created in the style of the European Renaissance and Baroque periods. Small breaks and fine details remove the weight from the figures and bring them into the present. read more

The Engadin as a living artwork

The artists of the Alpine Art collective, Ernestina Abbühl and Rolf Bräm, explore the Alpine landscape, each interpreting it in their own artistic way.

Ernestina Abbühl creates abstract reliefs that address central themes such as ice, rock, earth and Alpine flora. The Romansh artist reveals nature and explores what lies beneath its surface. She processes the stories of objets trouvés containing plants by combining these elements with handmade paper and wax. The rugged Engadin landscape of rock, firn and glaciers inspires colour nuances, layers and high-alpine emotions in her work. Her characteristic reliefs combine the rugged nature of the Alpine landscape with sensitive and patient processes. read more

Rolf Bräm impresses with his expressive skill and clear graphic design language. Influenced by his fascination with the elemental forces of nature, he focuses primarily on stones and mountains in his works. During hikes and road bike tours, he creates sketches that he then uses to develop idiosyncratic mountain paintings in acrylic. Through strong reduction, clear forms and bold colours, these convey energy and power. Bräm's mountains carry emotion and exist as surfaces, colours and rhythms. Stones and wood are transformed into art objects that develop their own mythology. read more
