The Venus Project: Mare Nostrum I
Wolfgang Schaper presents the Venus Project. This ongoing series of figurative paintings combines classical techniques with modern references.
The Venus Project is an ongoing series of figurative paintings by Wolfgang Schaper. At its centre is the figure of Venus, who repeatedly emerges from or moves within the water. She symbolises change, lightness, and inner freedom.
Painted in the tradition of the European Renaissance and Baroque periods, the works combine classical painting with modern allusions. Through subtle details, delicate nuances and subtle irony, the mythological figures are liberated from their traditional constraints and brought into the present day.
Schaper's Venus is not distant or idealised, but present, approachable and self-assured. The works speak of beauty without pathos and sensuality with a hint of humour. These are images that do not preach but bring joy and open spaces.
Wolfgang Schaper is a German artist with Belgian roots. After studying visual communication in Germany and working as a graphic designer and illustrator for decades, he devoted himself to figurative painting. His works have been exhibited in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.
For Project 061, Wolfgang Schaper and Elvira Heimann have formed an artist collective. Although they both share a keen interest in painterly expressiveness, their approaches could not be more different.
Project 061 sees itself as a dialogue of opposites: impulsive versus multi-layered and abstract versus narrative. The collective is always searching for the resonance that unfolds between the work and its viewer. Their contrasting artistic styles shape the collective's profile. The result is a diverse range of works, from experimental pieces to classical paintings, all of which impress with their creative quality and clear contemporary attitude.
