ROTI
Switzerland
Roti is a contemporary Swiss pop and urban artist who has established himself within the Swiss art scene. His works are known for their expressive energy and clear visual language. In his Smile to Life series, he aims to remind us of life's positive aspects. Each piece encourages us to view life more optimistically.
'Smile to Life' is therefore more than just a series of paintings; it is a positive emotional movement. Each painting is an explosion of colours, stories and hidden messages that encourage us to smile, even in difficult times.
His paintings can be classified as being somewhere between realistic and abstract. Drawing on his fascination with the 1990s, ROTI takes viewers on an emotional journey into their past.
He incorporates elements, objects, and themes from everyday life into his work. These are based on complex compositions that are first assembled and visualised on a computer. He uses a variety of media and techniques for his pop art. These include prints, newspapers, old iconography, magazines, stencils, spray paints and text. He supplements these with charcoal and acrylic pencils. The artist then uses a palette knife to layer a variety of image planes on top of each other. This technique is inspired by his collage style in the digital realm. The result is abstract images of comic characters, in keeping with the tradition of pop art.
Through his series, Smile to Life, he aims to encourage people to view life more positively. Each piece invites viewers to adopt a more optimistic outlook. The smile has been a recurring motif in his work for some time and serves as a personal symbol.
