Liane Janissen
Switzerland
Liane Janissen's imaginary landscapes draw inspiration from her memories of real-life situations. She creates them using ink, pigments, glazes, and airbrush paints.
In this way, memories and inner images are translated into atmospheric colour spaces. Janissen experiments with a variety of materials, including pigments, glazes, resins, paper, cardboard, wallpaper, ink and airbrush paint.
By layering and superimposing these materials, she creates multi-layered, relief-like surfaces that impact the surrounding space in terms of colour and texture. The creative process always begins without preliminary sketches. Through an interplay of chance and controlled movement, Janissen develops colour fields that are reminiscent of sediments, currents or atmospheric layers, but which do not depict real landscapes.
Liane Janissen studied free painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a master student of Rupprecht Geiger and Gotthard Graubner. After spending several years in Spain, she settled with her family in Zug, Switzerland, in 2008, where she has lived and worked ever since. Her works have been presented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and are included in an important private collection. Janissen gained wider recognition as the initiator and curator of the annual ArtConnection Cologne charity exhibition, which featured over 30 different artists and ran for two decades under her direction. Since 2023, Janissen has also been responsible for the curatorial management of the Kurioz Gallery in Zug, designing an exhibition programme four times a year.
Her paintings thrive on the radical openness of the creative process, from the empty canvas to repeated overpainting. The result is work that combines intuitive image creation, physical presence and painterly condensation.
