Ulrich Erkelenz

Switzerland

From architecture to art - Ulrich Erkelenz is exhibiting his works in Zurich

Ulrich Erkelenz has been working artistically for more than 10 years. This year he will take part in the SwissArtExpo Zurich 2024 in August and the Art International Zurich 2024 in October. Erkelenz, who is originally an architect, is showing his works for the first time, which he divides into "portraits" and "lignulyphs".

His mostly "portraits" (acrylic, oil paintings on canvas) show a gestural, moving approach. Bright colors, physical effort and speed form the style of the abstract works. Themes and titles oscillate between happiness and philosophical thoughtfulness.
The "lignulyphs" are objects made of wood, "panel paintings". The textures added to the material and the often sparse use of color create a condensed, quiet, shimmering space with a minimalist aesthetic. Lignulyphs, says Erkelenz, are the result of a happy encounter (objet trouvé) and a memory (geolyphs). All "lignulyphs" have the same format and are partly processed on both sides. The type of attachment allows the board to be turned horizontally and turned upside down.
Erkelenz makes his picture frames as well as the "lignulyphs" himself. He takes each work into his hands several times in advance, works on it intensively and thus becomes part of the format.
He developed his artistic craft in stone sculpture, blacksmithing and painting at the Rheinau Art Academy, among others, and further developed his skills in oil painting with Prof. Jo Bukowski at the Bad Reichenhall Art Academy, Germany.
Ulrich Erkelenz was born 1956 in Duisburg, Germany. After training in the construction trade, he studied architecture and urban planning. In 1990 he moved to Switzerland, where he worked as an architect and client representative in Zurich. He discovered his love for art during his studies. During his professional career, he accompanied various "art in architecture" projects in the context of large public construction projects. Erkelenz lives as a freelance artist in Kaiserstuhl and Rafz, where his studio is also located.
