TSUNSHAN

Switzerland

TSUNSHAN is a Swiss-Chinese artist who was born and raised in Hong Kong in 1956. He studied art and design in Hong Kong from 1974 to 1978 and then moved to London, where he completed his art studies in 1981. During this time he earned his living as a street portrait artist.

He was awarded the Anna K. Meredith Scholarship and used it to further his training in painting and sculpture in Florence in 1981/1982. He then moved to Milan, where he worked as an artist and designer. Since 1988 he has lived and worked as a graphic designer and artist in Switzerland. His works have been exhibited in various galleries and art museums in Europe.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
« In my paintings I navigate through the expected and the unexpected. Often I don't know what the next gesture will do and somehow I have to clear my mind before I start painting. Water, oil, paint, sand, pigments... I try to direct their movement, like dancing with a trusted partner, but I don't always succeed and I have to allow them to go their own way - even if it's not the one I expected! It is a principle of nature.
I approach my work with an open mind, without a predetermined message and trust that the meaning will emerge through the intuitive process. The painting is the result of the feelings that arise in me and the viewer. I am often asked about the meaning of my works - my answer to this always appears under the picture: "Untitled".
For me, the content of my works is dynamic and constantly changing. I am always surprised to discover new and unexpected images in my works and hope that the viewer can have the same experience. »
